1989 TOPPS BASEBALL TALK CARDS

The 1989 Topps baseball card release was unique in that it included a special subset known as Talk cards. These cards featured short interviews and quotes from major league players and managers on the front, with a photo on the back. It was an innovative concept for the time that took baseball cards beyond just images and stats.

The Talk cards provided a glimpse into the personalities of some of baseball’s biggest stars through their own words. A total of 36 different Talk cards were produced as part of the flagship 792 card base set. Some of the biggest names included were Nolan Ryan, Ozzie Smith, Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens, and Tony Gwynn. Managers like Whitey Herzog and Tommy Lasorda were also featured.

Topps’ creative team must have spent time conducting interviews and compiling interesting quotes from around the league to feature on the cards. They touched on a variety of topics from memories of early career struggles to advice for young ballplayers. Future Hall of Famer Wade Boggs offered this insight: “It takes a while to adjust to major league pitching. You have to learn to be patient and not try to pull everything. Hit the ball where it’s pitched.”

Another Talk card stood out for its humorous quote from Boston Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens: “I never worry about pitching when I’m in a groove. The only time I worry is when I’m not in a groove.” His self-awareness and blunt honesty made for an amusing soundbite. Clemens was one of the game’s most intimidating pitchers, and this card helped show his more playful side.

While most of the Talk cards focused on individual players, a few highlighted managers. Future Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog of the St. Louis Cardinals offered this perspective on his managing style: “I try to let the players play. I don’t want to take the fun out of the game by being too strict.” Herzog was known for his relaxed demeanor, and this quote encapsulated his player-friendly approach.

Another manager featured was Los Angeles Dodgers skipper Tommy Lasorda. Never one to be brief, his Talk card quote took up nearly the entire front: “The biggest thrill in baseball is to stand on the top step of the dugout, look out at a crowd of 55,000 fans and know that every one of them is pulling for your club. It sends chills through your body.” Only Lasorda could have turned a simple quote into such a long-winded but passionate response.

While the photos on the backs of the Talk cards were nothing special by themselves, they provided context and faces to go along with the personalities being expressed on the fronts. Some even featured action shots that related back to the quotes. For example, Nolan Ryan’s card showed him mid-windup with the caption “I’ve been blessed with a good fastball…”
