His Donruss and Score rookies have tracked along a similar price curve to Chipper Jones, with the higher grade Donruss versions reaching the $500-1000 range and the rarer Score rookies pushing past $2000. Thome’s iconic long swing and lefty pull power made him a fan favorite from the beginning.
While not a rookie, Atlanta Braves superstar Dale Murphy had arguably his best season in 1991. After years of MVP caliber play in the 1980s, Murphy enjoyed a late career resurgence in 1991 by hitting .277 with 20 home runs for the Braves. His signature red and white Donruss card from that season has developed into one of the most desired Murphy issues, routinely commanding $150-250 in high grades due to his strong statistical performance that year. If given a PSA/BGS 10 gem mint grade, example of Murphy’s 1991 Donruss card could sell above the $500 mark.
Another 1991 Dale Murphy card of note is his limited Upper Deck short print. Smoltz rookie cards tend to be a bit more affordable at $150-300 since he did not initially start and was less heralded compared to Maddux and Glavine coming up. Still, they present a tremendous long term investment opportunity as we now know Smoltz’s career trajectory.
While overshadowed by Maddux, Glavine, and other superstar teammates, another valuable 1991 Braves pitcher rookie card is Steve Avery. The hometown Atlanta hero and former 1988 first overall pick showed dominance with a 16-8 record and 2.94 ERA in his first full MLB season of 1991. As one of the original “Tomahawk Chop” Braves young core players, Avery’s rookie cards maintain popularity specifically among Atlanta collectors. Higher grade versions of his Fleer and Score rookies can sell in the $150-300 range today.
Beyond rookies, superstars like Ken Griffey Jr. kept producing must-have cards during their prime years in 1991 as well. Griffey’s iconic Upper Deck card where he leaps high for a catch was particularly coveted by collectors at the time and the excitement has not died down 30 years later.
